Around the World in 80 Gardens

It all happens on 26 April 2013: Hamburg’s south will become a popular destination for gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers. On a 100-hectare site in the heart of the Elbe island Wilhelmsburg the international garden show hamburg (igs 2013) will showcase the creativity of landscape architects, gardeners, and plant breeders. Based on the theme of Around the World in 80 Gardens, the show will take visitors on both a trip around the world and through time, and will also visit different cultures and the earth’s various climate and vegetation zones. Nestled in seven worlds of experience, the 80 imaginatively designed gardens tell tales of wanderlust and holiday fever, foreign languages and customs, a lack of water, and exotic plants and spices. For one entire summer the park will serve as an open-air theatre for concerts, cultural events, and participatory events, and will also be a sports paradise for those seeking movement, as well as a culinary highlight for connoisseurs of local and international cuisine.

First the show and then the park

After the exhibition ends on 13 October 2013, Wilhelmburg’s new island park will be handed over to the residents of Hamburg. The park will serve as a green oasis in the middle of the city, with extensive lawn and barbeque areas, areas for recreation and sports, a canoeing canal, a high ropes course, a large terrace restaurant, and a cultural kiosk. In short, everything a mobile, health-conscious, and international urban society could wish for. This is the overall goal of the igs 2013: Using a large and temporary event to create a permanent park in the centre of the Elbe island Wilhelmsburg; a park which, like the city’s Winterhude Park, will provides local residents as well as visitors from afar with many years of enjoyment.
