World of Nature

World of Nature

Water, woodland and meadows: Hamburg is one of Germany’s greenest cities. More than nine percent of its area are parks and open green space. Shaped by the glacial valley of the river Elbe as well as the tides, a fascinating mixture of different natural landscapes has developed, a mosaic of fertile marshes, steeply edged moraines, moor land, tunnel valleys and dunes made up of river sand and shingle.

Here, 5 gardens of artificiality stand in contrast to the cultural landscape grown wild, suggestive of wilderness.

In a large reedy marsh, the five gardens of the World of Nature seem like small islands in the rippling green expanse. The thematic gardens can be reached via narrow wooden paths through the reeds.

This World's charm lies in its exaggeration of the topic of nature, akin to the motto 'back to the future': the areas that were formerly allotment gardens are returned to nature, and at the same time, a possible development of the future of nature is on display.

Garden in a changing climate

Will we soon walk through palm tree forests where the thick trunks of oak trees once stood? Here, the visitor to the garden show directly experiences the effects of the climate change. Places where green meadows still bloom with flowers may soon become deserts…

The interplanetary garden

Outer space, infinite expanses ... will we live and tend our gardens in outer space, too, sometime? Will plants still exist then, or will something completely different develop? This garden takes visitors on a trip to an uncertain, but exciting future and opens new horizons.

Animated plant fantasies

A colourful array of flowers welcomes the visitor to this garden. Luminescent orchids, radiant sunflowers, gladioli gently swaying in the wind, the ground covered with a carpet of crocuses. We would like to bend down and pick a large bunch of flowers, but what is that?  Where is the fragrance…? Since when do crocuses and roses blossom at the same time? And why are the roses suddenly flickering?

Food production going up in smoke

The world is heading for a food shortage crisis. The demand for food is increasing – the amount of arable land area is shrinking. The imminent collapse of the fishing industry will become a huge sustentation problem for many people on this earth.

In large water tanks the food of the future bubbles and seethes. Have you ever eaten plankton cake? Seaweed salad? Jellyfish schnitzel?
