The World of Activity

Everything here is in motion: At the high ropes course people climb around at lofty heights, while nearby others slowly pull themselves up a wall in the climbing gym. In the swimming pool people swim laps, skaters make daring jumps at the skate park, and on the boules pitch and playing field games are being played.

The World of Activity is a recreational area, playing field, and health area for everyone and therefore brings one of the garden show’s main themes to fruition, namely that the park of the future also be conceived of as a park for active recreational use. It’s all about enjoying physical activity. The gardens encourage acrobatics and magic, stretching and relaxation, and yoga and balance, and give people tips and stimuli to try new things.

And perhaps a place to ponder: Do I feel good in my body? Am I being good to it? What about my personal work-life-balance?

71. Yoga-Walking

Meditative walking and more

In the world of 21st century we spend far too much time seated. Walking is not common in our motorized world, it has almost become a luxury to go by foot. We even take the car to the gym. Yet walking is valuable in its own right.

Those who walk decelerate and learn to value slowness. Those who walk take time – time for themselves. Walking – gently starting to move the body – letting go – daydreaming.

Reflecting on what has passed and what is yet to come. Bringing together the body and mind, losing oneself in ones own rhythm. Breath-walking, yoga-walking, meditative walking – this garden aims to inspire visitors to walk.

72. Life in Motion

Feng shui garden

Change is movement, movement is life. In Feng Shui there are five phases of transformation that are symbolized by the five elements. They are drawn from the cycle of nature and reflect all the rhythms of life itself, such as day and night, the seasons, youth and old age, etc.

When the phases of transformation are in balance, we are able to draw strength and vitality from them and we can make optimum use of the potential within us. The Feng Shui garden strives towards a harmony of elements so that the user instinctively feels at ease. The garden contains peaceful areas for contemplation and there are also activities on offer.

73. Sport and Games of the World

Travelling around the world in motion

Every culture has its own customs and rituals. This also includes special games and forms of activity that are linked to the respective societies and the demands made by everyday life and which also serve to train and test strength, speed and stamina. In many cultures leisure and sports competitions and tournaments were popular.

In some cultural regions traditional sports have been cultivated over many generations and are to some extent still practised today, for example caber tossing. At the same time there are a wide variety of games and varieties of sports throughout the different countries of the world. It could be interesting and appealing to enable the games culture among the nationalities living in Wilhelmsburg to become visible and to allow space for design and utilization.

74. Playing and Circus Arts

From acrobatics to magic

The circus is as lively and surprising as life itself: it's full of ups and downs, and things are turned upside down. Acrobatics are considered a calculated risk and encourage people to experience adventures in physical activity in their everyday lives. But circus also means magic, from seemingly genuine illusions to playful tricks. People watch the goings-on in the circus ring, and the design should provide space for spectators to observe things. In the circus, there is room for creativity, fun, and moments of wonder and astonishment – for young and old alike!

75. Racing Heart

Endurance and a healthy cardiovascular system

Running and walking are in fashion! The attractive routes in parks, woods, around lakes and along rivers have for a long time not only been popular with walkers but also with joggers, runners, and walkers using hiking sticks. But what is the best way to run or walk if I want to stay healthy? How do I find the best way of getting started? What is the best dosage? This garden provides tips and tricks to show you how to quicken your pulse.

76. Stretching and Relaxation

The healthy finale for your workout

Every athlete is familiar with this moment. After exerting oneself in some way or another one is exhausted but also happy. It is particularly important to allow the body a period of relaxation and recuperation after physical exertion. The muscles that have been strengthened and put under stress must be allowed to stretch again. The way in which we recuperate has just as much effect on our ability to perform as sport itself.

77. Power

The outdoor trainer

Sport draws people outside! More and more people are seeking and utilizing facilities for activity outdoors, beyond the context of classic sport venues. This also applies to training with fitness equipment, which used to be commonly found in gyms and sports clubs. These facilities can now be found increasingly outdoors, often in connection with attractive running and walking routes, often suitable for the elderly, for people of all ages or simply for everyone.

This garden offers an “outdoor fitness studio” for targeted strength training. There is no excuse here for not engaging in physical activity. Even those who just take a short walk are inspired to exert themselves a little.

78. In Balance

Playing with balance

Sport, but also everyday life, requires a high level of flexibility, skill and highly complex coordination. The ability to coordinate, which develops in early years through child play in an appealing and challenging environment, a development that is later rounded off by the demands of everyday life and work, is no longer a matter of course. Children often need specific stimulus and support in order to develop a healthy mobility.

However, this theme is also becoming increasingly important for adults in a working environment that allows little movement. A quarter of the German population is over 60. The demographic trend shows that in 2030 the percentage of over-60s will increase to an estimated third of the total population. The level of mobility and sense of balance will have a decisive effect on how people manage their everyday lives and on the quality of the period of old age.

In this garden the visitors will find a sport and games course to promote more mobility and balance. To discover and experiment with – whatever your age!

79. Fit Kids

Fitness for strong children

Children need movement in order to develop their health and ability to perform. Movement is not only essential for the bodily but also for the cognitive development; it promotes the willingness to learn, the ability to learn, and the psychosocial sense of well-being. Through their movements children conquer and comprehend the world.

As a supplement to the other play areas in the park, which appeal particularly to the perceptive- and coordination ability of smaller children, this garden provides fitness facilities for slightly older children. Stationary machines and fitness points are available here, which target the children’s coordination, strength, speed and stamina.

80. Crossover

Hangout for active teenagers

Many youths like to be active. They want places where they can be active together – by day and also in the evening. However, these must also be places to meet and hang out – cool places.

This garden will be planned and possibly partially constructed during a weekend workshop together with youths from Wilhelmsburg and Hamburg and the youth association Crossover e.V. (Julia von Dohnaniy, Samy Deluxe, Marvin Willoughby).
